Three years ago, thanks to a generous donation, we were able to send our then-new emergency medicine residents to participate in emergency care seminars in South Africa, taught by some of the leading emergency medicine educators in Africa.
Now, two years later, we have a generous match challenge from this same donor, AND we have an opportunity to send our residents to spend four months training with this same group in Pretoria. We have structured an 'away rotation' for our residents that would focus on emergency neurosciences, gynecologic emergencies and pediatric emergencies. These are three areas where we feel the training they can get in Maputo is significantly inferior to the global standard of care, resulting in a daily impact on risk of death and disability due to these medical emergencies.
